The Legends of Delphi & the Osios Lucas Monastery

The Legends of Delphi & the Osios Lucas Monastery

Delphi lies in a mountainous territory and is a major archaeological site with a variety of well-preserved ruins on cliffs overlooking the sea. It’s a UNESCO site, with some of the most interesting mystical and mythological connections to ancient Greeks; so much that it came to be ‘the centre of the world’. According to myth, the oracle at Delphi originally belonged to Gaea, the Earth goddess, and was guarded by her child Python, the serpent. Apollo slain Python and founded his own oracle there, which grew to be so powerful, rich and so pivotal to the ancient city states, that Nero is said to have removed 500 statues from the site. Your TrueTrips guide will take you along the complex and the museum. With some beautiful exhibits, such as the Charioteer of Delphi, dated back to 470 BCE. En route you will have a stop at the monastery of Hosios Loukas, also a UNESCO site. This is a famous extremely well preserved monastic complex from the 10th century with impressive mosaics and local monks who can share what it’s like to live there.
