Traditional Portuguese style blends with Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque influences creating a unique kaleidoscope of colors, patterns, and textures. First we’re off to the country’s capital of Lisbon, where the Alfama district is a must-visit to feel the city's distinct vibe and experience its unique charm. The narrow streets lined with brightly colored buildings and traditional tiled facades create a playful atmosphere that seem to dance in the sunlight. Hop on the historic no. 28 tram, known for its distinct yellow color, and wind your way through the neighborhood all the way up to the 11th century Castle of Sao Jorge. As you explore, take notice that it’s not just the colors and shapes that make Portuguese architecture so interesting, it's also the attention to detail. Look closely at the tiled facades - like azulejos, the blue and white tiles that are a hallmark of Portuguese architecture - and you'll see intricate patterns and designs that tell stories of Portuguese history and culture.

Next we’ll enjoy the city of Porto! Here we head to the Ribeira district which is a fantastic area to explore, with winding colorful streets along the riverbank of the Douro. Here we'll also find brightly painted buildings with intricate balconies and ornate facades. We will definitely take the opportunity to cross the Dom Luis I Bridge - this characteristic view of Porto with its colorful buildings and tiled roofs is stunning!

But, Portugal's vibrancy is surely not limited to its architecture - it's also reflected in the country's rich wine tradition. And there’s no better place than the Douro Valley; it’s a wine lover's paradise, with steep terraced vineyards that produce some of the world's best port wine. With many great spots to choose from, for this trip we’ve chosen to stay in the area of Alentejo, where the hot and dry climate produces excellent full-bodied red wines that are sure to delight your taste buds. With such a vast wine tradition and strict use of indigenous grape varieties, Portuguese wine is unlike any other; it is a distinct attribute that weaves into the country's unique personality.

And speaking of personality, a trip to Portugal wouldn’t be complete without experiencing the country's music scene. The soulful and melancholic sound of Fado is the heart of Portuguese music. It's a genre that's steeped in tradition and history, and is typically performed in intimate settings like small bars and restaurants. Folk music is also quite popular, often played with traditional instruments like the guitarra and cavaquinho. Chiming in just perfectly with the country’s rich cultural heritage, Portuguese music is a sound feast that is sure to leave its mark.

For us, Portugal is a place where the past and present blend harmoniously together, creating a spirited and dynamic culture that's unlike any other; the people are warm and welcoming, the food is delicious and diverse, and the wine is simply exceptional.
