Chasing The Sunset In Santorini

September 28, 2018
Santorini is one of the most popular Greek islands – a destination celebrated for its unique beauty, volcanic landscape, and world-famous sunsets. In Santorini, you’ll feast your eyes on the iconic white and blue domed houses that reflect the warm-colored sunlight and the calm waters of the Aegean Sea. Even though sunset views are truly majestic on many parts of the island, there are 3 places where golden hour is simply overwhelming; in fact, we can pretty much guarantee that sunset views don't get much better than these!

1. Oia - The  All-Time  Favorite
The picturesque village of Oia is a great place for admiring Santorini's famous sunset. Built along the caldera, Oia offers many lookout points with awe-inspiring views. So, head to our favorite spot and get prepared to witness the remarkable moment when the sun plunges into the serene sea of the Santorini archipelago.

Best Sunset Spot in Oia:
The Byzantine Castle at the edge of the caldera. Keep in mind that this spot tends to get overcrowded so set out early to get a good seat.

2. Imerovigli - The Quiet Place
The balcony of the Aegean, as many call Imerovigli, is adjacent to and just north of Fira – the island’s capital. Perched high up on the caldera, Imerovigli offers amazing views of the Santorini sunset and is typically less crowded than Oia.

Best Sunset Spot in Imerovigli:
The Anastasi Greek Orthodox Church offers panoramic views of the sunset and the impressive inner coast of the caldera.

3. Pyrgos - The Alternative Choice
An off-the-beaten-path viewpoint where you can enjoy magnificent sunset views in a calm and peaceful setting. Even though it's not located on the caldera, this quaint village offers impressive panoramic views not only of the sunset, but of the entire island.

Best Sunset Spot in Pyrgos:
Relish in the spectacular view from the top of the imposing Pyrgos Kasteli, a well-preserved Venetian castle that dates back to the 16th century.
