Naples

A Cultural Escapade Naples

In Naples, Easter is an extraordinary time of year, with festivities that stretch across a week-long celebration. From Palm Sunday right up to Easter Monday, the entire week is rich with cultural experiences. One of our favorites is on Holy Thursday, when you’ll witness the awe-inspiring rite of “Sepolcri” which commemorates the Last Supper. Every church altar is adorned with flowers and carpets, and visitors pay their respects while kneeling and praying.

And of course nothing in Italy is complete without a feast! So on Easter Sunday, celebrate like the locals with a celebratory big lunch, typically together with friends and family, or on Easter Monday plan for a picnic or ‘pasquetta’ as the Italians call it.

Sicily

A Cultural Escapade Sicily

Sicily, the land of the sun-kissed shores and ancient history, is renowned for its fervent celebration of Easter. The historic city of Trapani boasts the famous Via Crucis, an epic pageant of 20 life-size statues, each one representing a station of Christ's journey to Calvary. The elaborate artistry and intricate detailing of these statues are a true testament to the religious and cultural heritage of Sicily.

For those with a sweet tooth, the Pupi di Zucchero or sugar puppets, are a delightful Sicilian Easter tradition. These exquisitely crafted sugar sculptures depict various biblical characters and are a feast for both the eyes and the palate!

Calabria

A Cultural Escapade Calabria

In Calabria, where the rugged coastline meets ancient traditions, Easter is a time for gathering and feasting with family and friends. The Cuzzupe, a sweet bread shaped in symbolic forms such as the cross, the lamb, or the dove, is a mouth-watering staple during this time. Indulge in this traditional treat, made with love and care, and feel the warmth and hospitality of Calabrian culture.

In the quaint town of Caulonia, the Holy Week Procession is a solemn and poignant celebration of Easter. A group of men carrying a large wooden cross, followed by a statue of the Madonna and other religious figures, leads the procession. This meaningful event provides a rare chance to bask in the beauty of Calabrian tradition, immersing yourself in an ancient culture that has stood the test of time.

On the Amalfi Coast, the charming town of Ravello is renowned for its Easter festivities. The Ravello Concert Society Easter Festival showcases a series of classical music concerts held in the verdant gardens of the town's stunning Villa Rufolo. The acoustics and ambiance of this picturesque venue make for an unforgettable and enchanting experience.

The Holy Thursday ceremony in Atrani, is a deeply moving and solemn affair. The Battenti, hooded men dressed in white tunics, beat their breasts with their bare hands as a sign of penance during a procession that is illuminated by softly lit torches. As they walk and sing, the beautiful hymns and chants that accompany the procession create an otherworldly experience. This powerful visual spectacle is a testament to the deep devotion and faith of the people of Atrani and leaves a lasting impression on all who witness it.

From tantalizing sweets to mesmerizing music and stunning processions, Southern Italy's Easter celebrations offer an abundance of cultural experiences. This part of the country is the perfect fusion of age-old traditions, Mediterranean vibrancy, Italian passion, and awe-inspiring natural beauty.
