Athens - At a Glance
Many visit Athens to pay their respects to the incredible Acropolis and to experience the city known as the cradle of Western civilization and democracy. Along the way, Athens reveals its truly sophisticated yet simplistic and raw aura, making it one of Europe’s most fascinating and multidimensional cities. Thanks to the 2004 Olympic Games, the city renovated many of its structures, landscaped several public spaces, introduced pedestrian streets, and completed a subway system that is both an engineering and aesthetic marvel. Athens is an ever-expanding city whose unique high energy is second to none—and genuinely contagious!
GETTING AROUND
BY TAXI
Although all your transfers to airports, stations, harbors, and hotels have likely been included in your TrueTrip experience, there may be times when you will use a taxi to get around. Always ensure that the driver starts the meter when you enter the taxi, and check the meter before paying. If in doubt about a fare, check with your hotel concierge, who can also arrange taxi pick-ups for you.
BY CAR
Although public transportation makes getting around quite easy, if you’d like to explore more of the area, you may want to rent a car. Your hotel concierge can assist you with arrangements through a local car rental company. We always recommend careful and cautious driving in Europe, as roads can be old, narrow, and heavily trafficked.
BY METRO
Athens has an efficient public transportation system. The Athens Metro is an extensive network of rapid transit railway lines that run mostly underground in central Athens, passing by key landmarks and extending into the city’s suburbs. Choosing the right ticket is essential to fully benefit from the Athens Metro system.
